about
The song was originally inspired by Go Set a Watchman, Harper Lee's follow up to To Kill a Mockingbird. In the story, an adult Scout returns to Maycomb from NYC, where she discovers Atticus is racist. She struggles with how to reconcile her disappointment with the love and respect she feels. When I read it, I saw parts of my own story. "Acres and Acres" was first performed for Wild Bob's Musical Book Club at Lindberg's in Springfield, MO years ago. We recorded a version of it in 2020, with the intention of including it on my last album. For some reason it didn't make the cut. As I was finding my way through some mental struggles, the song kept creeping back into my brain. I couldn't ignore it, so I had to let it out. My wife convinced me the title should be simply “Acres.” I hope it means something to you.
lyrics
They say you can’t go home again, but they lie
Home is where it always was, the world just passed it by
I wound up back here, by this winding wheel
Surrounded by these acres of things we conceal
Your words used to sound like a gospel train to me
But the roll was called up yonder and I did not agree
I can’t be your mockingbird, I can’t do the things you do
Your blood runs through my feet, but I can’t wear your shoes
CHORUS
There are acres and acres of things I want to say to you
There are miles between us and days and days of work to do
There are bibles of things you need to say to me
But for now, let’s walk these acres
I need to kill my idols, I know it’s true
But I got acres of love stored up for you
I don’t want to walk away, I don’t want to leave this town
I just wanna walk with you even if it’s burning down (2x)
CHORUS
