Data from the Department of Justice and Centers for Disease Control suggest 1 in 4 women will be sexually assaulted at some point, in some way. And that’s just based on the reported incidents. Most women will tell you that number is higher. When we add harassment, misogyny, and a culture of violence to the mix, it’s hard to be a woman in the world. This song was originally inspired by the character Janie Crawford, in Zora Neale Hurston’s novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, but the narrative also comes from the lives of the many brilliant, powerful women I know.

This song features Liz Carney (Izabel Crane) on finger-picked guitar and piano. She and I sing this song as a duet. Molly Healey adds the emotionally powerful cello. Other musicians: Dallas Jones – bass, Brandon Moore – drums, and Barak Hill on acoustic guitar.
