about

So, after we decided to return to our old neighborhood in Springfield, after a year on the road, I started thinking about houses…and the Battle of Jericho. This story of conquest, chronicled in Hebrew Scriptures (known to evangelicals as The Old Testament), is widely used by Christians as an illustration of muscular faith. The story goes that Joshua and the Israelites marched around the walls of Jericho several times, then shouted, and the walls came tumbling down. Following the orders of god, they then went in and killed everyone. Everyone. Except a prostitute and her family who had betrayed their fellow Jerichoans. I’ve heard this story my entire life. It’s easy to get fixated on the faith issue, or the heartless mass slaughter of innocent people, but I started thinking about the people who lived in the Jericho suburbs, who had to endure the smug, self-righteous religious warriors marching past their houses every day for a week, blowing on their damn trumpets. Made me think about how hard it can be to live around so many people who are so arrogant and entitled simply because their faith tradition is the dominant culture in the region. Brandon Moore helped us see this as a banjo-driving, Shovels and Rope-inspired tune. But there are no horns.

lyrics

This house, so divided
Cut, collided
Lights are out

This house, knuckles writing
Poets fighting
Got my doubts

CHORUS On the road to Jericho
With horns marching past our door
On the road to Jericho
I don’t want to live here any more

This house, on the border
Out of order
About to fall

This house, can’t ignore her
Or civil war her
Can’t build a wall

CHORUS

This house, was our debut
Where we pulled through
When we were young

This house, was our rescue
Where our kids grew
It’s where we’re from

CHORUS
