I’ve written elsewhere about moving away from religion and faith. It was a long and emotional journey for me. This was one of the first songs I wrote about that experience. This is also the only song on the album that isn’t new. There’s an earlier version of this song on Brother Wiley’s 2014 album, “Murder the Mystery.” I like that rendition, but it never felt like it captured the feeling. For this record, we started out recording this as kind of a quiet, acoustic guitar track, but it still didn’t feel right. Dallas Jones came in and played upright piano, and the perfection of that sound just washed over me. Barak added tasteful guitar riffs to the crescendoing rhythm section, and it became more of what I intended when I wrote it. We ended up using no harmony vocals at all. It just felt more personal and vulnerable to leave me out there by myself. It was scary, but I’m really happy with the outcome.
