about

Led by the proud crunch of Jin J. X’s Les Paul, Melissa Henderson Rea’s wailing backup vocals, and the soaring tones of Dallas Jones’ Hammond B3 organ, this song is a stylistic departure for me. You might call it apocalyptic soul…a Motown critique of alternative facts and ruling ideology.

At the end of George Orwell’s dystopian (and eerily prescient) novel 1984, Winston and Julia admit to betraying each other under torture. Winston had come to love what he used to hate, while the “long-hoped-for bullet was entering his brain.” He had succumbed to the influence of Big Brother and become something he never wanted to be; the bullet symbolically murdering his true self. The story is a cautionary tale to resist the engineering of our consent, a warning far too few of us heed.

lyrics

I want good times and you want good times
But every move we make feels like a crime
We broke the rules and you knew we would
We can break ‘em again and you know we should

Thought if I drank more wine and shook more hands
Thought if I’d take more time and take more stands
Thought I would make it to the final curtain call
But in the end the bullet’s coming for us all

CHORUS If I knew all that maybe I’d live free
If I knew all that maybe you’d see me
If we did all that under the chestnut tree
I sold you and you sold me
Waiting for the bullet

The story’s all been cleaned and the crowd ginned up
Voices quarantined and poured into our cup
Dinner’s served and the table’s all been set
But we don’t have to sit down ‘cause we’re not dead yet
