about

While Betsy and I were living in our van and traveling the country, we didn’t know for sure where we’d eventually end up. We had sold our house in Springfield, and were kind of auditioning other cities for possible relocation. When we’d say we might end up back in our hometown, some people were incredulous about why we would do that, after experiencing so many cool places around the country. What we couldn’t always explain to them is, that while it is fraught with systemic problems, our home in the Middle is made up of a community of family and friends we can’t replace elsewhere. Plus, we discovered it made us a bit uncomfortable to be in super progressive cities where everyone thinks alike. I don’t walk in lockstep very well. And it’s a hell of a lot cheaper in Springfield. A hell of a lot. I think the song also speaks to my longing for a place in the middle, where we can talk to each other. Not necessarily a centrist politics, but a common ground. Without it, it seems like we’re lost. We tried to build a sound here – with my guitar, Karl Eggers’ banjo, and Dallas Jones’ bass – of a couple of folks playing a tune around the living room.

lyrics

They ask when I’m gonna leave, where I’m gonna land
But I’m rollin’ up my shirtsleeves, cutting through the tall weeds
Got a place to stand
I don’t always line up, with the politics and creeds
But I’m sticking around here, where the middle leads

CHORUS I’m sticking around
In the same damn town
Where the sounds of my neighbor
And manual labor
Are the common ground
Not heading to the West Coast
At least not to stay
I’m sticking around here
For another day

Not sure what I believe, coming off the rails
No guarantees, don’t have a Socrates
Don’t have a heads or tails
I don’t always wind up, with the saints or with the thieves
I’m sticking around here, where the middle leads

CHORUS

World’s not gonna get me (3x)
